Henna is Cool! August 11, 2009

I cut my hair, and I dyed it using Henna

From henna

I have no neck!

From henna

It was really hard for me to capture the true color on camera, I think my hair is the shade in between the picture above and the picture below

From henna

It’s like, burgandy, and I started off with medium brown with a WHOLE BUNCHA roots growing out. The roots don’t really dye, because henna can only make your hair darker, not lighter. BUT the roots do have a red tint to them that you could see up close or in the light.

So, allow me to elaborate on why I chose henna as opposed to regular hair dye and what I learned in the process. I became interested in henna because Lush sells their own henna hair dye [they call it hair caca, haha i'm serious] and was planning on dyeing my hair anyway to get rid of the roots, but I’m always iffy about dyeing my hair with commercial dye because of house damaging it is and I already put my hair through a lot. So I was intrigued by this Henna, because they say that it’s natural and it leaves your hair in better condition than before you dyed it. Well, a lot of hair dyes claim that it will condition your hair as it colors, but I guess I was more apt to believe in the Henna because it doesn’t require ammonia and because I browsed through the Lush forums and saw before and after pictures of people who used Henna, and their “after”s really did look healthier than the “before”s so it’s like the proof is in the pudding.

How it works is, the Henna comes from a plant and its ground up and crushed for you to make a paste with. The paste then leaves a red stain in your hair or sometimes brown or almost black if other things are added to the henna. After doing my research I was really excited about getting the party started and henna-ing myself! But I didn’t want to buy mine from Lush because theirs is 20 bucks, and yeah you get more than one use out of it, but I didn’t want to make that big of an investment at first. So I look around online, and find cheaper options, but the problem with that is I would have to wait for it to ship, and I’m wayyy too impatient to wait for shipping. So I was thinking what if I went to an Indian grocery, like how I did when I went to get my coconut oil. Because I’m sure it would be inexpensive there since henna is such a common thing in India, and I would be able to get my hands on it right away. So, I decided on making another trip to the Indian store.

*Oh this is off topic, but I figured out yet another reason I might want to look around an Indian grocery…I was talking to my Indian coworker and she said that the only makeup she would use is kajal, which is like eyeliner to us, but it is in a bullet form [imagine a pointy lipstick]. And kajal is supposed to be a healthy alternative to eyeliner too! So, I might go try to find kajal next…

Before I hit up the Indian store, I remember reading something online about a dangerous ingredient in some Henna mixes, but I didn’t quite remember the name of the ingredient until later on….when I bought some Henna and realized mine had that in it! The ingredient is called PPD, apparently it is a common ingredient in almost ALL hair dyes because it is cheap and it makes hair dyes darker. So if you wanted a dark henna dye, make sure it uses indigo instead of PPD. The websites I read had stories of shady mendhi [the henna tattoo designs] artists that would use straight PPD and say that they can give you a “black henna tattoo” and that people would have very bad reactions to the PPD. Here are the sources that I found that warn against it

http://www.hennapage.com/henna/ppd/index.html

http://www.hennaforhair.com/ppd/index.html

To make a long story short, I used the henna that I bought that has PPD in it. PPD was the last ingredient on the list, and I figured since it’s in hair dye anyway and I never had a reaction, I should be ok. I did a strand and allergy test the day before I dyed my hair too. Now, just cuz I took a risk and used that particular hair dye doesn’t mean I would recommend it to anyone else. I guess the only reason I decided to use that dye was because I bought two packs; one was a red dye and one said dark brown. When I did a strand test with the dark brown henna, I didn’t notice a change at all, so it seemed like if I dyed my whole head with the brown henna I might as well have done nothing.

I really like how my hair turned out. I read that with each henna session, the color intensifies and I would like my hair to be a deeper red, I think that would be fun and a nice change of pace from the brown that I’ve had for over a year now. And I’m now a believer that henna is conditioning to the hair because my hair turned out soo soft! I know after dyeing normally, I can feel the damage that was done and my hair didn’t feel good after commercial dyes. I really really like this henna stuff, I’m glad I tried it, I almost wish that my hair was naturally brown so I could continue to have such vibrant results with the henna, haha but I guess I gotta be happy with what God gave me…and then tweak it :D

Beauty Oils December 28, 2008

I’ve been discovering a lot of uses for the different oils I have for beauty purposes

southcoastshopping.com

- Coconut oil or Jojoba for eye makeup remover [don't get the coconut oil on the rest of your face though, it's comedogenic!]
- Add drops of Jojoba to your regular moisturizer to make it even more moisturizing
- CO or JO , maybe olive oil, to tame flyaway hair [just a bit]
- CO mixed with JO [yeah I use these a lot cuz its what I have! haha...and they're awesome] as a pre-conditioning treatment for the hair
- Can always be used on cuticles, elbows, knees, feet and then cover with socks..dry spots
- Jojoba, olive oil, and castor oil for the oil cleansing method
- Olive oil [the other oils would probably work also] to clean lip brushes or brushes with creamy makeup on it. Put a drop on a paper towel and then brush the bristles the drop and then brush it on a dry area of the paper towel to wipe off the oil, then cleanse the brush as you normally would
- After-shower moisturizer, works well when your skin is still damp
- Mix olive oil and white sugar to make a rich body scrub
- Some use oils, like Jojoba directly on their face for a moisturizer, but that never really worked out for me

I got my Jojoba oil at Trader Joes and my coconut oil from an Indian grocery store, but you can get it Whole Foods kinda stores, or GNC, I saw it at Walmart too in the section for dietary supplements

Revlon Mix & Mingle Lipgloss November 11, 2008

wnwHaul 002

They were on crazy discount at Walgreens! Revlon is phasing out this collection so all of it is at closeout prices! The texture is semi sticky and it feels moisturizing on my lips. There’s a faint lemon-y scent to it and no taste. Normally I wouldn’t pick out something like this because since there’s 3 colors in un-equal amounts, I would freak out if I liked one of the colors the best and I used it up before the others. Yeah I’m just weird like that. But I read a good review on it and the price was right so I decided to try it out. Plus I’m trying to get more brown lippies or glosses because, it’s weird, I always feel like they don’t look good in the tube but once its on lips, its really flattering! I would definately buy again, hopefully they don’t run out before I can get to them! Let me know if you want me to do swatches on the lips of these colors!

I also got some nail polish in Rockin in Rubies. $1.99

This is my DIY black frenchie! I normally don’t do french manicures. I’m just not that type of girl, but I saw a girl practicing her french mani with black nail polish and I thought it looked cool! I already know it won’t last though…I don’t take good care of my nails! haha

I have to do some homework tonight… so I’ll just do a really, really quick post.

Sugar hair removal paste recipe. This looks cool, I want to try it cuz I have a thing for waxing and sugar “wax” is easier to clean up than wax wax, haha. You know what I mean right?

Aspirin Mask October 8, 2008

For the few people who still look at my page, thank you! I know I update every blue moon now…but maybe at Christmas someone will buy me a brand new camera that doesn’t eat up batteries like it’s nothing and it’ll be easier to blog!

This is for those of you who haven’t discovered this cool, natural [er, sorda at least] method of exfoliation! The aspirin mask!

First, get some aspirin, an uncoated one if you can or a generic brand because those are easier to dissolve. The one I have is the Target brand. It says “coated” on the label, but the coating is minimal. Three pills are enough for the whole face, you can use more if you wish. In some sort of container [I use my handy dandy candle holder] wet the tablets with water. Use VERY LITTLE water, just get the tablets wet and then add 3 more drops because if there is too much water then it won’t be thick like a mask.

IMG_1330 copy

It’ll dissolve and you can mush it up with your finger

IMG_1332 copy

Add a few drops of honey. This binds the aspirin, helps it stay on your face, and it is moisturizing!

IMG_1333 copy

After mixing. One of the aspirin was stubborn and took a while to dissolve, that’s why you still see it there.

IMG_1335 copy

Apply this mixture to your face, leave on for 10 minutes and then rinse off. You can rub the mask in a circular motion to exfoliate because of the grainy texture. Supposedly the chemical properties of the aspirin is similar to salicylic acid and can help to fade acne scars. I haven’t really seen evidence of this myself, I just use the mask to exfoliate. I try to do it at least once a week and I’ll do the mask first before my normal cleansing routine.

Homemade Lipbalm September 7, 2008

You know that tub of “coconut oil” that I got at Walmart [the Blue Magic one]? I looked at the ingredients and noticed that the first ingredient is Petrolatum which is a fancy way of saying Vaseline. Yeh, I highly doubt vaseline with a splash of coconut oil is going to moisturize my hair, so I needed to find another use for that big old tub. I looked up what people use Vaseline [or petroleum jelly] for and a lot of them said as a lip balm. I decided to get crafty and make my own tinted lip balm :)

Start with blue coconut oil petroleum jelly.

lipBalm 003 copy

Add pigment. I used Everyday Minerals B&B blush because I found it was a bit dark to use as a blush. Although it’s a nice shade, it always went on heavy. The stuff underneath was the first batch of lip balm I made [late at night, bored]. Now I’m adding more balm and pigment to fill up the jar. The jar came from an old lip gloss that I didn’t like so i dumped the old stuff for my experiment.

lipBalm 004 copy

Add jelly and then mix it up a bit.

lipBalm 008 copy

Heat in microwave for 30 second intervals, mixing in between. I ended up heating mine for a minute and a half total. You could heat it up one more time to get it to really melt and be smooth.

lipBalm 011 copy

lipBalm 017 copy

Finished product! There are only 3 ingredients in the coconut oil I have so I don’t think it would be unsafe to put on your lips. I just know that petroleum jelly and coconut oil are common ingredients in lip balms or glosses and the last ingredient is “fragrance”.

Olive Oil and Honey Hair Mask August 8, 2008

I wanted to do a homemade hair mask today because for some reason my hair seemed especially dry. I looked up recipes for hair masks that contain olive oil because I noticed a lot of conditioning treatments for hair contain olive oil. It wasn’t until after I started to apply the stuff to my hair that I realized I regretfully forgot to take pictures to document the process! But at least this time around I could just try it and see if this is something that I would want to continue doing. I didn’t bother measuring out the ingredients because different websites said different things so basically I put a shotglass size full of olive oil with 1/4 of a shotglass of honey. [I actually didn't use a shotglass but a votive candleholder...but they're kinda the same size so you can use waht you have]. I just got out of the shower and my hair is still wet so I’m still not quite sure how this is gonna turn out, but I’ll be sure to let you know tomorrow!

Start with cracked/shattered eyeshadow

repotting 002 copy

Spray with alcohol or use a dropper. A couple drops will be enough

I got the spatula at Michaels and I painted the handle pink

repotting 004 copy

Make your press with fabric and a quarter. I chose underwear that I don’t use as my fabric HAHA

repotting 005 copy

Press down firmly. The fabric will create nice hatchmarks on the eyeshadow.

You can repeat the process until you get the desired effect. Also, it helps to rotate the coin while pressing to smooth over any obvious cracks. It doesn’t look perfect but at least I know it’s not going to make a mess all over my room anymore!
